To share our acquired wisdom, we should ask, not tell. Scott tells the story of his former Mentor Kenny McCarthy and how a less learned at age 19 still lives in him today.
This card and story are based on the ORCE framework.
Consider each stage in a little more detail as you listen.
1- Observe: One of the most important things a manager can do to assess their teams’ performance accurately is to observe what people are doing, and how they are doing it.
2 - Record: Keep a note of key performance evidence – both positive and negative. Make sure you mention it at the earliest opportunity: in your regular one-to-one, or sooner if the opportunity arises. Remember that managing performance should be a daily occurrence.
It is not necessary to formally record everything you see, but a mental or physical record will help you to highlight all performance in a timely manner.
3 - Classify: It is important that all examples of performance are recognised and discussed – this is the only way that people will develop and improve.
4 - Evaluate: The final stage of the assessment process is to make a judgement about what the recorded evidence tells you about someone’s performance.
